If only the 'Privileged' would listen

Studied this book for a Master's in Social Work program. There was nothing in it that I didn't already understand about 'Privilege,' growing up Black in America. But for those who suffer from the afflictions of 'entitlement' and 'privilege,' this book is crucial reading. The truth will hurt and will be hard to swallow. But so does anything that will make you 'all better.'

A Beautifully Constructed Gem of a Book

This superbly researched book on oppression should be on every social work educator's book shelf, or better yet on his or her office desk. This is the kind of book the researcher will want to return to again and again. This second edition is much more thorough than the first edition. The inclusion of British and Canadian as well as U.S. oppression and anti-oppression material as well as useful charts to organize theoretical perspectives makes for a comprehensive focus. The chapter on privilege is worth the price of the book. A great teaching tool, especially for graduate students.

It is important for social work students to understand social theories of oppression and despite the former reviewer's negative opinion, Marx was a prominent social theorist and Conflict theory a prominent social theory. Theory needs to inform social work, otherwise, what is the point?

Save your time and read something else

In all honesty, I'm not sure where the positive reviews come from. First, I like the concept of the plot. A post-apocolyptic-like world where vampires and humans fought and the humans lost. Of course. We always lose. Vampire "king" feels a bond and falls in love with a human girl. It really isn't a new concept, but it's one that can be done really well. Here, the characters were not developed enough and it's not because there wasn't enough time in the book. It reads like the author tried to develop the characters, or thought she was developing them, but they are very one-dimensional characters, and everything we know about them has been decreed by the author. We don't get to learn their emotions or behaviors as readers. Instead, the author has to tell us everything. But not only do the characters suck, but the plot is really wonky, too. Honestly, Ari just read like a slut to me. I like erotics and romances, but Ari was just a slut. If the plot is going to revolve around the idea of a "bond" then there shouldn't be three of them. Or, there really isn't much of a bond in the first place if Ari can't help herself from ripping her clothes off anytime a male vampire comes around. And the ending/denoument was just a big let down. Really? That's what it was all about? And Ari is still a big slut? Will definitely not bother with the second book.

This was a great book!
I really loved the twist in the plots and I instantly fell in love with all the characters.
The characters were very well developed and it was a really enjoyable read with just enough blood guts and steamy scenes for my liking!
I think that anyone who likes vampires or even just a good romance book should give this one a chance, you will not regret it.!

I really enjoyed this spin on paranormal romance. I'm a huge vampire fan, and I love dystopian stories as well. This book combined both styles and gave an original spin to the usual vamp romance. Definitely can't wait to read more of this series.

Very well written, fully developed characters, and it's hot hot hot. Probably my favorite LJ Baker book!

All that I remembered

I'd read Downright Dency in the 6th grade and loved it. Somehow or another, I've kept a memory of it's enjoyment for 60 years and one day decided I'd try to find a copy of it. I'd forgotten what the book was about but remembered that I'd read it over and over again. I so wanted not to be disappointed in that memory and started reading with apprehension. But it was still there: a stubborn, determined young girl caught between her feelings and moral upbringing. And I wanting to be more like her. At one time in my life I attended a Quaker school and enjoyed that aspect of the story, I'm so glad I have it in my library. It's a friend that's found it's way home.

Disappointed young reader

I like the way this book was written. I like the Quaker style of it, and that's why I picked it up. But, before I get into a book,I like to skim through it to see if it's OK- a tactic I've learned from my mom.
First of all, if you hope to learn about the Quaker life from the veiw of a girl, don't read this book. All you'll bump into is a girl who gradually falls into a whimsical romantic relationship with an outcast boy that she taught how to read.
Second of all, this book teaches that if you really have to, go ahead and tell a lie. In truth, there is never a time in life where you really have to tell a lie. Lies are bad with no exception. You can always work around telling a lie.

So overall,this book has a good Quaker vocabulary, but a few poor moral choices.

"Downright Dencey" tells the story of Dionis (Dencey) Coffyn and Sammie Jetsam. The story begins when Jetsam is insulting Dencey's family. Dencey gets mad at him and throws a stone at him. The stone cuts his arm and injures him badly. When Dionis asks for forgiveness, Jetsam says that she must give him her one and only storybook, "Pilgrim's Progress" and teach him to read it. This becomes a problem. Dencey's mother won't let her teach him if she asks for permission, so she must lie to teach him. More than once, Jetsam's care giver, the one and only drunk Injun Jill, tries to capture Dencey and force her away, and more than once, Jetsam stands up to Injun Jill and distracts her, while Dencey safely gets away.
During this time, Jetsam begins to learn to read and learns what respect is. Finally he grows up to be a great young man, and as a young man, he falls in love with Dencey. But will the rest of the town accept him the way Dencey does?
This book is for everyone. It's part love story, part adventure story, part everything-but-the-kitchen-sink. It's no wonder that it was a 1928 Newbery Honor Book! For ages 10-17.

So much personality!

Normally I hate switching between characters but Tracey did such a great job with Nick and Alex! I laughed, felt sadness and pain for Nick, Alex and their crew. From book one to Fearless.. I did not expect such personality from her characters. I felt like communication between them was very natural and hilarious! Can't wait for book 3.

This series is amazing! A must read. I don't like reviews that tell you everything that happens in the book, so no spoilers here. If you like the X Men you'll love the heroes and villains in this book. Very well written, funny as hell. It has love, action, and comedy, what more could you want?

I've read most of what T.M. Nielsen has published and for the most part I've enjoyed them all. To be honest this series should have stopped a couple books ago at this point it just goes on and on. It isn't bad just over done for me and not as entertaining as it could be.

Have anybody notice that everybody Kyrin cared for or bonded with they died? I hated that all but 2 of the Dimension Knights died.

I love reading TM Nielsen's books

If you've read the rest of the series this book fits right in. I love reading TM Nielsen's books. They are mostly clear of profanity with the exception a few instances of taking the Lords name in vain, but low on sexual content even though it is tastefully implied. As someone who can't read a lot of literature written for adults because of the exploits of the characters Dimensions Saga and the Heku books are both great reads. I hope to read more from her in the near future!
