Large - Complete - Costly, but worth it

What is it? Hardback complete episode guide to the Simpsons. It has a sewn in book mark (the sign of high class real serious books). In fact, it might have been better as two hard back volumes.
Is it just a re-hash of the older published guides with some new stuff? NO! While there is some recycled stuff, there is new stuff which wasn't in the earlier guides, so even for seasons 1-10 there are new bits and pieces.
Besides the usual episode synopsis (1003 pages worth), writer-director-executive director-guest star credits, what else is there? (1) complete list of the Tracy Ullman shorts with brief descriptions and notable quotes, (2)detailed discussion of opening sequences - season 1, season 2-20, current opening, special xmas opening, post movie opening, billboard gag list, (3) list of couch gags and episode tags, (4) list of every time Homer says "D'Oh", (5) list of when Homer says "MMM...", (6) all of the church marquees,"Funeral Today: Homer Simpson's Vegas Wife", (7) Complete Itchy and Scratchy filmography by title and episode "Why Do Fools Fall in Lava?" and untitled clips, Itchy and Scratchy Movie, Itchy and Scratchy Radio show-musical-puppet show, Itchy and Scratchy Commercials, (8) List of all the crap Krusty sold out for and slapped his name "Krusty-O's",(9) Tribute to Troy McClure with complete list of all educational films/filmstrips, infomercials, TV shows, self help videos, and films "Here Comes the Coast Guard", (10) Lyrics to all of the songs sung in the show "We're sending our love down the well", "Dr. Zaius", (11) List of who does what voice - Dan Castellaneta has nearly 4 pages, (12)List of celebrity guest stars, Isabella Rossellini is between Charlie Rose and JK Rowling, (13) obsessive fan detailed index "Amy, cries like little girl 836"
Is it pricey? Yes, at $90 it is an expensive item, but probably worth it....If the shows runs another 10 years, I'm sure we'll be gouged for another a SupraUltimate Maxi Guide and I'll end up buying it as well - it is after all the greatest TV show ever.

A must have for every true Simpsons Fan.

I own the other episode guides as well and this makes my collection complete. My friends love to read through it and there is so much stuff in there I didn't know, it might take years before I read it all. I could only imagine what kind of effort went into making this book.. 1200 pages! If there was ever anything you ever wanted to know about The Simpsons, it's probably in this book.

Engaging and efffective lessons on ASL and Deaf Culture in America

I borrowed this through the Prime Lending Library, and didn't have to read far before deciding to buy my own copy. It is better on the Fire, but the images are high enough in quality that I can read it on my Kindle keyboard model too.
One of the best things is that the book is engaging. The progression of topics is logical, but not dry and linear. Rather than teaching the alphabet and numbers first, then common nouns and verbs, etc., the book intersperses the signs for letters and numbers with ASL history, notes on deaf culture and etiquette, and practical exercises and visualizations. This would be a good textbook for anyone from early middle-school through adult, in home school or even as a family activity just to learn and grow together.

This is an excellent book for the beginner. It teaches you all about sign language. Not just how to do it but a lot of its history. Great book. My daughter is teaching her child sign language using flash cards and it book! It's working!

I cherish getting to read stuff like this about my dad. We all rarely know all there is to know about what rattles around in our parent's minds. Reading this let me learn a few new things about how he saw the world. Larry asked some amazing questions that had never been put to dad. Thank you, Larry.

One of the most readable books of contemporary philosophy I've ever read.

Conversations with Carlin is thoroughly enjoyable. I just finished it, and I LOVED IT. I really didn't want to stop reading. It is a fairly short book (approximately equivalent to 89 pages, or so Amazon says). Although I always had positive thoughts about George Carlin -- I knew he was smart and funny and unique -- I wasn't a big follower of his act/shows/books. I never realized he was such a thinker. I honestly enjoyed reading his thoughts and I loved the questions the interviewer asked to bring those thoughts out.

I particularly loved the "argument against parental supervision," the way Carlin almost wasn't born (no spoilers here), reading about how Carlin came up with ideas, his thoughts on politics and education, and especially his thoughts on George Bush. Great stuff!

Conversations with Carlin was one of the most readable books of contemporary philosophy I've ever read.

(Sidenote: I felt that Getlen had the right amount of journalistic professionalism to keep himself out of it - really focusing on Carlin the entire time. That really helped me lose myself in the what Carlin was saying, and not have to feel like I was experiencing him through someone else's lens. I mean, I *was* experiencing him through Getlen's lens, but at least the lens was invisible, if you know what I mean.)

Insightful interview with a much-missed comedy great

As a longtime Carlin fan, I was so thrilled to be able to spend some time with the non-performing side of him. You learn his routines and you cherish his deftly honed turns of phrase, so it's fascinating to hear him (er, read - but you can also hear his voice in your head, at least I could) talking in normal conversational style about such a wide range of subjects. I've read various magazine interviews with him over the years, but none, obviously, was able to go to this length. And Carlin deserves this length. Larry Getlen obviously developed a great rapport with his subject, delving into topics from Carlin's formative childhood to really lofty philosophical questions, and Carlin, bless him, was game for discussing all of them. This is such a gift for anyone who loves Carlin and, like me, feels like the world became a less interesting place the day he died. Will make my Christmas shopping easy, for at least a couple of likeminded friends and family members.

Who was Lenny?

At the end, I had to shake my head. I saw this life as a waste in the same way as Charlie Parker's. Brilliance and genius subverted by drugs and egomania. The book comes across reasonably unbiased, but Lenny is painted as a martyr but also as the architect of his own demise. This book was a fascinating journey, and many names are dropped along the ride. After the 3/4 point in this book I began to see Lenny as a drug-addicted loser who had a gift for convincing people to do his will. Sounds exactly like Charlie Parker, and there are many parallels to the life of the jazz musician of the same period.
While this book was being written (completed in 1974), Goldman states that Bob Fosse was working on a film based on Lenny's life. I saw the result "Lenny", many years before reading this book, and though an entertaining film, it has little to do with the story told here. the main problem is that it is ultra-condensed, while the book tends to be excessively detailed.
Lenny had a gift, but like many geniuses had not the equivalent gift to manage it. The book does manage to give an impression of the highs and lows of Lenny's life. After reading it I searched for recordings of Lenny Bruce, and managed to find the unedited recording of the Carnegie Hall concert, know to be his most spontaneous and "best" performance. Reading the book put this into perspective. When you listen to Lenny, you may find his humour to be obscure, sort of in-jokes that you don't get right away. His appeal was more to the hip jazz musician crowd, and to them he made total sense. To the rest of the audience, it was the shock value they came for, and this is where his tragic conflict begins to eat his career, trying desperately to prove he wasn't a "dirty" comic. Lenny was not so much a comic, but a revolutionary, who went against the norms and held everything up for criticism. In the post-war era he moved in, this would be a tough apple-pie crowd for him to get on his side. Very intense story. If you were aware of Lenny's work before, the book will interest you. Otherwise it will be a long ride with an inevitable ending for those who mix hard drugs with a fast life.
