About the Author
Bob Mullaly is a professor in the faculty of Social Work at University of Manitoba. Previously, he has taught in the Department of Social Work at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia, and in the Social Work program at St Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick, which he founded. He is also the author of The New Structural Social Work (OUP Canada, 2007).

If only the 'Privileged' would listen

Studied this book for a Master's in Social Work program. There was nothing in it that I didn't already understand about 'Privilege,' growing up Black in America. But for those who suffer from the afflictions of 'entitlement' and 'privilege,' this book is crucial reading. The truth will hurt and will be hard to swallow. But so does anything that will make you 'all better.'

A Beautifully Constructed Gem of a Book

This superbly researched book on oppression should be on every social work educator's book shelf, or better yet on his or her office desk. This is the kind of book the researcher will want to return to again and again. This second edition is much more thorough than the first edition. The inclusion of British and Canadian as well as U.S. oppression and anti-oppression material as well as useful charts to organize theoretical perspectives makes for a comprehensive focus. The chapter on privilege is worth the price of the book. A great teaching tool, especially for graduate students.

Important Perspective

It is important for social work students to understand social theories of oppression and despite the former reviewer's negative opinion, Marx was a prominent social theorist and Conflict theory a prominent social theory. Theory needs to inform social work, otherwise, what is the point?
