A Book For Everyone!

This book is needed in every classroom and every home. Teachers can use this book during Autism Awareness month and to teach about acceptance. This book is also great for the classroom because it is written by a child so it enforces the idea that all children have the ability to be authors. This book is written from the view of a child who explains Autism and shows his life with his Autistic brother. It is written in a way that is clear to children of all ages and the illustrations are real photographs from the author's life. Parents can use this book at home to teach their own children about what is means to be accepting and to expose their own children to the different type of people that exist in the world. I know this book will get tons of use by me in my own effort to spread Autism awareness! Amazing!

Here, too, are examinations of the drainage basin as a geomorphic unit, water and sediment in channels, channel form and process, and hillslope characteristics and processes.
In Part III, the authors cover geochronology, drainage pattern evolution, channel changes with time, and the evolution of hillslopes. Two appendixes will help readers convert units and equivalents, and identify symbols and nomenclature. 1964 edition.

The classic of stream geomorphology

This book forms one of the foundations of the field of stream geomorphology from one of the founding fathers. I would recommend it as the basic text for someone serious about learning about fluvial geomorphology. Considerable work has been added to the field since Dr. Leopold's book was first published in 1964 but this forms a very good synthesis of a complex subject. As a civil engineer/geomorphologist, I have referred to this book many times over the past 25 years since I was one of his students at Berkeley. A great value in paperback.

Wolman won a medal in 2000 from the American Geophysical Union, and in the citation they said, "although written 35 years ago, it remains one of the most cited works in geopmorphology and was recently republished by Dover, not as a historical artifact but as required reading for the newest generation of fluvial geomorphologists. Brimming with clarity and literacy... a good bedtime read." (well... at least for those who want to understand stream morphology.)

In September, the Bodleian Library, Oxford published “Wilfred Owen: An Illustrated Life” by Jane Potter. Owen (1893-1918) has been the subject of `six recent biographies (not to mention others less recent). With Rupert Brooke, Owen is at the front of the line of the groups known collectively as the “World War I poets.” He is one of 16 World War I poets commemorated with a memorial stone in Westminster Abbey.

Potter’s illustrated history of his life is deceptively simple looking, almost like the kind of biography you might find in a middle school library. But it is carefully crafted, extraordinarily well researched, and engagingly written, drawing upon the extensive correspondence he maintained with his mother, his poetry, and a considerable number of sources and photographs from the English Language Faculty at Oxford.

The oldest of four children, he was the son of a railway clerk who had dreamed of settling in India and a mother who was decidedly evangelical. As he matured, he was undecided (or indecisive) about a profession or line of work, until the war intervened. He also had been writing poetry.

Owen didn’t enlist in the British Army until 1915. In 1917, suffering from what was then called shell shock (and what we today call Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder, or PTSD), he was sent to Craiglockhart, a hospital in Scotland specializing in shell shock cases. There he met Siegfried Sassoon, who had been sent to the hospital for a very different reason – to avoid a court-martial for a letter he wrote opposing the war (I posted an article on Sassoon’s The War Poems this week at Tweetspeak Poetry).

The friendship with Sassoon was pivotal for Owen’s poetry. Manuscripts of his poems with Sassoon’s emendations still exist (one is on display at the Imperial War Museum). His poetry changed and grew. It began to be noticed, and published.

Potter walks us through each phase of Owen’s short life, using pictures of childhood, family, friends and the military. Each section includes his poems at the end, adding a poignancy to the text. You look at the pictures of the young, the hope and expectancy in his face, and read his poems, and in a few short pages see a life of promise cut short.

One of his best known poems is this one:

Anthem for Doomed Youth

What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
— Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,—
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of goodbyes.
The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

Owen almost survived the war. On Nov. 4, 1918, he was shot and killed by enemy fire alongside a canal. A week later, on Armistice Day, his parents were informed of his death.

And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

Owen is my favorite WW1 poet - I have most of his books and was delighted when this was released. It s a beautiful little book -
but the content is a real disappointment - a rehash -poorley written - his gayness totally ignored. Sorry….

An excellent and therapeutic read! This book helps us mothers to identify the guilt we feel, subconsciously much of the time whilst we are trying to balance absolutely everything - and tells us not to despair, we can do something about it! This book takes you on this sensitive journey to healing yourself, from offering practical advice to various exercises you can undertake to help you take charge of your life, which in turn will free you up to nurture your loved ones and create a happy, loving environment. A great read for all mums irrespective of working status – especially
for anyone experiencing ‘mummy guilt’. I really liked the way the
author drew on her own personal experiences to reach theories and
conclusions on guilt-free living. All in all, a fantastic book with realistic
goals, principles and lifestyle advice for the mother of today who feels

Tel est le fil conducteur ; mais les épisodes et les intrigues, d'une merveilleuse invention et d'une charmante diversité, ne cessent de créer de nouveaux rameaux d'histoires ; au fil des péripéties accumulées, des aventures qui, de méandre en méandre, se recroisent et s'amplifient, selon la subtile fantaisie de l'auteur chinois, surgissent une multitude de personnages divers qui composent une fresque haute en couleurs, débordante de vie, de la Chine du Moyen Âge.

About the Author
Kate Fletcher is an Ecological Design Consultant whose clients include Marks and Spencer, TerraPlana, Clarks, People Tree, Intermediate Technology Development Group. She has a PhD (1999) from Chelsea College of Art & Design, The London Institute, for which she investigated the development of environmentally responsible design strategies in the UK Textile Industry.

Easy to read, yet substantive---no reliance on just pretty pictures and glazed-over summaries here, but a thorough investigation into multiple ways of implementing sustainability in textile and clothing design.

Second edition of a landmark book. Provides deep philosophical underpinnings and ethical framework for sustainability in fashion. Goes far beyond the narrowly conceived approaches presented by fashion commerce. Refreshing and inspiring. Required reading for all fashion professionals and students.
