Another great Putnam history

If you're a serious fan of Aviation history you're probably familiar with the Putnam aeronautical series of monographs of major US and UK aircraft makers.
Miles was a smaller UK firm that produced a series of outstanding light aircraft before WWII and naturally switched to trainers during the war before failing in the overcrowded postwar UK market.
Written by a firm insider, this book gives you the complete history of all Miles types and each type is illustrated with plenty of photos and three-view illustrations. Many un-built projects are also detailed and shown and illustrated. Brown also discusses why each type was successful..or failed to be built, usually leveling the blame at the UK Ministry of Aircraft Production (who if you believe the author, got it wrong as often as they got it right). All too often a promising design is detailed only to end with a statement that it wasn't ordered by the bureaucrats and the UK industry or war effort was the poorer for it. Among those not built were a series of blended wing transports and forward wing aircraft that would look modern today. After the original firm financially failed in the late 40s, Miles tried to get back into the business in the mid-50s with a jet trainer, the M100 Student. Despite great looks (stretched with a back seat, it would make a fine private jet today) it failed to secure an order from the RAF.
I have most of the Putnam books, and this is one of the most interesting. Not only did the firm produce great aircraft, it had a sense of innovation that allowed it think far beyond its humble roots. Some of the un-built projects included advanced long range airliners and supersonic research aircraft. It's well written in a conversational style, almost as if you're sitting in a pub with the author or the Miles brothers.
Long out of print, this is an expensive book on the secondary market, but if you're a fan of UK aviation, well worth the price.
