From the Author
Many years of experimentation went into the development of the vocabulary memorization technique taught in this book. In preparing this second edition How to Learn & Memorize German Vocabulary, my objectives were to provide information that is useful, informative, and unique. Judging from the numerous emails I've received and the great reviews, my objectives have been met.
I offer this advice:
If you are brand new to German, then How to Learn & Memorize German Vocabulary may or may not be for you. You will most benefit from this book if you have already studied some German and struggled a bit in the process of memorizing the words of this beautiful language.
From the Back Cover
The days of rote memorization for learning a new language are long gone ... or are they? Unfortunately, it's always been tempting for language learners to write new words hundreds of times with pen and paper. Or perhaps you've fanned index cards in front of your face for hours praying that repetition alone would permanently lodge the words in your mind.
Reality check: rote learning rarely works, certainly not with any lasting value.
With the system taught in this second edition of How to Learn and Memorize German Vocabulary, however, learning, retaining and using German vocabulary words has been made incredibly easy and fun. With no prior memorization skills whatsoever, any reader of this book can memorize as much German vocabulary as they want. A simple set of techniques makes the memorization process - which most people find painfully frustrating - a complete breeze for even those who are convinced that they have a bad memory.

Worst Way to Learn German Vocabulary
By Pliny Miles
How to Learn and Memorize German Vocabulary (2nd edition) is a very disappointing book. I listened to a webinar by the author and was impressed by some of what he said, so I purchased his book on German vocabulary. Here are some of its many flaws:
- There is very little German in the book. Only about 30 pages are directly related to German. The rest is either general instruction on mnemonics, the author's annoying self-promotion, or just plain FILLER (for example, how to memorize a deck of playing cards).
- There are lots of errors and typos, including some glaring ones. For example, on page 85 he defines the word "Fahndun" - but there's no such word in German. In the mnemonic description for this word he refers to "dung", so probably he means "Fahndung" - or perhaps he means the related verb "fahnden" (since his definition refers to a verb, not a noun) - but who knows? I get the impression from several clues in this book that the author's knowledge of German is minimal at best. (See his other books on Amazon, for the numerous other languages he professes to know.)
- More generally, I think the entire premise of this book is faulty. I've studied mnemonic techniques and foreign languages for many years. I use "memory palaces" every day - but I never (or very rarely) use them for words in languages that are closely related to English, such as German, French, Spanish, etc. You really don't need mnemonics to remember basic German vocabulary: just use the many hundreds of English-German cognates, study German word families, get some good basic books, software, etc., and you'll learn almost all the vocabulary you need, in a much more direct and permanent way.
- It is totally POINTLESS to organize vocabulary words alphabetically, in your memory, as the author recommends. This is really more like a party trick, to "amaze your friends" (by using mnemonics), but it's definitely not a good way to assimilate basic German vocabulary, for use in real-life situations. Yet even this aspect of the book is confusing, since the author alphabetizes a very short list of GERMAN words (pages 79-86), and then a little later (pages 90-98) there's another group of words "listed here alphabetically ... for easy placement into your own Memory Palace system" - but this time the words are alphabetized by their ENGLISH meanings ("Amount, Argument, Art..."). So which is it? Are the main entries in this memory palace/dictionary to be in German or in English, or in both languages jumbled together? It would be hard to think of a more convoluted way to go about learning German vocabulary.
- It seems like there was a lot of copying and pasting in the production of this book, with little or no proofreading. It's definitely a rush job, and I'm sorry I bought it.

My favorite German book so far
By Anonymous
Nothing frustrates me more than language learning. But this book has a workable solution that, at least for me, has made it MUCH less painful to learn German.
I'm so glad he put out a second edition because the guy has gotten thousands of letters over the years and this book gives you the benefit of all that feedback.
Highly recommended!
