Reliable Resource for Nutritional Health Information

There is a lot of useful information on the internet these days, however, when it comes to health, much of that information is trendy and subject to poor quality research. This book presents an extremely thorough and balanced approach to health and nutrition in a readable manner.

This book isn't content with just telling you what to do, it breaks nutritional health down to basic elements and explains the functions with usable knowledge that will help you address situations that might not be directly covered in the book itself.

I am going to use this book as supplementary material for homeschooling in addition to using it for practical health insights for myself and my family as a whole.

This is a book that I would recommend every household to own.

Nutrition is a must with my husband and I, especially as we get older and wiser! This book is perfect for what anyone needs to know about good nutrition and why it is so important. It even has recipes, which I have tried, and they are great! It is quite a lot to read and that is fine with me - the more knowledge I get, the "smarter" I am in doing the right things to be healthy. Feeling great and positive is, and has always been, a high priority in my life. Great book!!!

This book is a very good comprehensive nutrition book. Not just in its discussion of what is needed for good nutrition, or what vitamin deficiency does and how to correct it. It explains also the biochemistry of the nutritional functions in terms the average person could understand.

Not a book for the person looking for any easy diet to loose weight, or to understand why they are sick. This book is for those who really what the facts!

I have been using the WRTH since 1957... I have used it around the world in my travels with the USAF. I buy one every year just to keep up with the shortwave and Broadcast Radio stations. It is extremely handy for chasing down latest addresses.

I am a Ham... K7ATU, WRTH comes in handy when tracking down SW Stations that could interfere with Ham Band frequencies.

The WRTH is one book I will always have ready in the shack, and I will buy a new one each year. This year, I got my 2016 Edition on the 4th of January this year!... Color me impressed.

Essential reference book for short wave listening

First aid for the psyche

As a therapist, I'm constantly looking out for helpful resources for clients. This book has quickly been added to my list. It so clearly explores the seven most common--and inevitable, if you're human!--psychological injuries and then provides specific "first aid" treatments for each:

1. Rejection--The emotional cuts and scrapes of daily life
Description:
Rejections can inflict four distinct emotional wounds, each of which might require some from of emotional first aid: lingering visceral pain, anger and aggressive urges, harm to self-esteem, and damage to feeling that we belong. (p. 17)
Treatments:
* Argue with self-criticism
* Revive your self-worth
* Replenish feelings of social connection
* Desensitize yourself

2. Loneliness--Relationship muscle weakens
Description:
Loneliness makes us constantly on guard, prepared for the disappointment and rejection we are sure will come. As a result, we miss opportunities to make social connections and behave in ways that push others away. (p. 53)
Treatments:
* Remove your negatively tinted glasses
* Identify your self-defeating behaviors
* Take on the other person's perspective
* Deepen your emotional bonds
* Create opportunities for social connection
* Adopt a best friend

3. Loss and Trauma--Walking on broken bones
Description:

4. Guilt--The poison in our system
Description:
Guilt usually serves an important function by alerting us to when we might have harmed another person or when any actions we're considering might do so. However, if our offense is serious or if we've already made significant efforts to apologize to a person we harmed or atone for our actions in other ways and our guilt remains excessive, or if we suffer from substantial survivor guilt, or separation and disloyalty guilt, emotional first aid is indeed necessary. (p. 119)

* Reengage in life

5. Rumination--Picking at emotional scabs
Description:
In order to break the self-reinforcing nature of ruminative thoughts and allow our wounds to heal, we must interrupt the cycle of rumination once it gets triggered, and we should weaken the urge to ruminate at the source by diminishing the intensity of the feelings that fuel it. We must also make efforts to monitor our relationships and to ease the emotional burden we might be placing on loved ones. (p. 154)

* Change your perspective
* Reframe the anger
* Go easy on your friends

6. Failure--Emotional chest colds become psychological pneumonias
Description:
When we fail repeatedly or when we respond to failures in ways that set back our confidence, our self-esteem, and our chances of future success, we run the risk of allowing our emotional chest cold to turn into psychological pneumonia. Because much of the anxiety associated with failures can build upon itself, it is best to be prudent and apply psychological first aid treatment as soon as possible after meaningful or bothersome failures occur. (p. 189)

* Take responsibility and own the fear
* Distract yourself from performance pressure distractions

7. Low Self-Esteem--Weak emotional immune systems
Description:
Having low self-esteem weakens our emotional immune systems and inflicts three kinds of psychological wounds: it makes us more vulnerable to psychological injuries, it makes us dismissive of positive feedback and resistant to emotional nutrients, and it makes us feel unassertive and disempowered. (p. 232)
Treatments:
* Adopt self-compassion and silence the critical voices in your head

* Increase your tolerance for compliments
* Increase your personal empowerment
* Improve your self-control

Practical and completely achievable advice for handling emotional injuries

I love how this book 1) acknowledges that we need to address our emotional wounds with they happen and 2) uses practical examples and gives tangible step-by-step instructions to help deal with emotional injuries. It's not another book that leaves you with a stack of ways you *should* think and *should* react. Instead, you give it a read to learn the science -- then keep it handy (like a medicine cabinet) for when an injury happens. I've read somewhere around 10 books in this genre and this one by far stands out as the most practical and achievable guide to emotional health.

A significant book, provides actionable tips and contributes to de-stigmatizing psychological challenges

I became curious about Dr. Winch's work after hearing his TED talk, where he spoke with passion and compassion about his vision for a future where people know as much about tending to their emotional and mental health as to their physical health. The world presents more complex (and interesting) challenges today than ever before. The more we can acknowledge the universality of psychological challenges such as rejections, failures and loneliness, the better we can find ways to manage them together.

As someone who appreciates learning materials that are easy to apply and reuse, I love the book for its structured, clear and actionable content. Dr. Winch effectively uses anecdotes from his practice to illustrate how to apply the various techniques.

About the Author
O. Richard Norton is former director of the Grace Flandrau Planetarium and Science Center at the University of Arizona and the Fleischmann Planetarium at the University of Nevada at Reno. He studied meteoritics under world-renowned meteoriticist Frederick C. Leonard. Norton currently teaches astronomy at Central Oregon Community College and serves as president of Science Graphics, a company that produces instructional science slides for use in college and university classrooms.

Great Meteorite Book

An excellent book for both amateur and professional looking for a refresher on wonderful subject of meteorites, meteors and meteroids. The author covers just about every topic you can think of and with sufficient depth to keep you interested for some time. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the fascinating field.

Why Not Find The Time To Look For Meteorites?

Here's the book you'll need to take along, as meteorites are much easier to find when you know their characteristics and the places where they stand out from other rocks. I've held onto my own copy of Rocks From Space for some time, although I have not gone out hunting for meteorites yet, because this is the book that entices me to make time for it. There are a lot of good quality photographs printed here on slick magazine paper, and some are in color. The book is what it's supposed to be, but if I was going to improve it for someone planning to pack it for a hike across the Utah salt flats, I would suggest that the next edition be on a lighter weight paper. This guide fills you in on the famous meteors (In the sky) and meteorites (Striking the earth) which fell in earth's recorded history. These are great fun to learn about, as there's nothing like a surprise from outer space to brighten up everyone's day. And while meteorites can even impress us as being pretty weird in the modern era, wait until you read about the one that fell in Alsace, France in 1492. It drew so much curiosity and awe that even King Maximilian of Germany came to see it. Many people took souvenir pieces from it over the centuries, but its last 122 pounds are protected by being in a local museum. Another fall Norton records came in 1992, when a car belonging to a young lady was struck. Excited collectors soon made generous offers for both the car and the meteorite. Not too long ago an old meteorite from Mars was sliced open to reveal what many scientists suspect is evidence of past life on that planet. The possibility was considered strong enough that it prompted President Clinton to go on national television to announce it; so if you use this book, you may even help confirm one of the greatest mysteries of all time.
