Aimed at the Oberver, Not the Theoretical Aspects

This book is aimed at the advanced undergraduate or graduate student in astronomy or astrophysics. It is well suited for use as a university text, probably for a one year course. It also includes enough matherial to be useful to research scientists who may have specialized in other areas. The orientation of the book is more to the observer and analyzer of steller atmospheres rather than the theoretical approach.

In my opinion the student should have enough of a background in astronomy to at least understand the concept of spectrum lines. And math through Fourier transforms -- Chapter two of this book covers Fourier transforms, but twenty-five pages isn't quite enough to provide the understanding that I believe is needed for the rest of the book, or indeed for the questions that end Chapter 2.

This is the third edition of the book. It is updated to include the recent discoveries in both observations and the analytical tools that have been developed. To a lessor extent, some areas of the book have been revised to follow suggestions made by users of the previous editions.

About the Author

Mark Hall is a true storyteller and a teacher with a heart for ministry. He is lead singer and songwriter for the Grammy Award-winning band Casting Crowns, whose first three albums have sold nearly four million copies. He has been in ministry nearly twenty years and has served at Eagle's Landing First Baptist Church in McDonough, Georgia, for the last eight years. Mark admits he’d be overwhelmed by life’s demands were it not for his wife of nineteen years, Melanie, who also serves as Casting Crowns’ road manager. Even on tour, Mark and Melanie homeschool their four children: John Michael, Reagan, Zoe, and Hope.

Tim Luke serves as executive pastor of Eagle’s Landing First Baptist Church, where he has been on staff for nine years after serving as editor of In Touch magazine, the devotional magazine of Dr. Charles Stanley’s ministry. Tim worked as sportswriter for ten years, the last four as a beat writer covering the Atlanta Braves. He has been married to Karen for twenty years and has two sons, Jacob and J.P.

"Thrive: Student Edition by Mark Hall of Casting Crowns"

"Thrive" is a new devotional inspired by Casting Crowns' latest album and its title song. This book was published on August 5, 2014 by Zondervan. This devotional explores the idea of what life could be like if Christians did not just "survive" until the next ________ (fill in the blank). "Oh, I can't wait until finals are over." "I hope this hardship passes quickly." "I can't wait until my kids stop waking me up at night." And so on and so forth. Mark Hall instead poses the question, how would we live life differently if we look at how God can be glorified through a situation instead of how long we will be stuck in it? He relates life to a tree in the town he grew up in that flourishes every year. He takes us back to that tree, asking what makes it thrive. Why does it live so well? Its roots are the answer. The trees roots dig deeply into the soil to soak up nutrients there, and spread out underground to stabilize itself. Relating this to Christians, he says that when we "dig deeply" into God's Word, we soak up essential spiritual food to help us grow in Him. Likewise, when we "reach out" to fellow believers and encourage one another as Paul says, we have more tangible stability. This was an excellent word picture for me, and I like how he gives examples of ways to thrive, like keeping in connection with God and not losing our focus when things in life get tough. Jesus did say that he came to give us life, and life to the full, and Mark Hall helps explain how to live to the fullest in this book.

This was an excellent read, and I really liked that the "Student Edition" was so relatable for me. It encourages me to keep my eyes on God, and know that thriving in His plans is very different from thriving (being successful) in the world's eyes. I would recommend this book for high schoolers and college students; I also think it would make a great gift, especially if the recipient is overwhelmed with "just surviving".

The so called "Student Edition" is just like the regular edition

If you are buying this book thinking it's a student edition, DO NOT purchase. The so called "Student Edition" is just like the regular edition, word for word. I bought this edition thinking we could use it at our Bible Camp this summer. I was disappointed in this misrepresentation by Zondervan. You would hope that Christian publishers would rise above the false advertising of the secular publishing world.

I received a copy of Thrive to review. I think the way this book was written makes it very easy to live everyday life and live with faith. It gives you an understanding of how to actually incorporate faith into your lives and not just say it. Mark Hall gives real stories that are enjoyable to read. It is more story telling than a story telling you what to do and how to live.
There are 30 chapters and they are each broken down into about 4-6 pages each. It is easy to follow along and you don't feel overwhelmed when reading it. This makes it great for younger readers. The book is easy to stop off and then restart without feeling lost. This is also a book that can be read multiple times. With the different chapters, you can chooses the ones that relate to you in different times.

I would honestly recommend this book for all ages but I think it would be especially good for younger readers, middle/high school students. This would make a great graduation gift. This book would also be great for the upcoming New Year. Alot of people make resolutions to better themselves and their lives and reading this book would help give them ideas and direction.

Short on substance and details

Having purchased two other books of this nature by Mr. Lang, I placed myself on the waiting list at Amazon and waited months the get the book in my hands. I did not hesitate to break it out of the packaging and dove right into it. The first forty-five pages were dedicated to the history and other background information necessary to get a good understanding of the Greenes' design concepts and the practical methods used by the Hall brothers to construct the pieces. I was very disappointed with the scant number of details that one might expect from such a technical manual. There are a few photographs that show some of the processes (most of us know how to use a shoulder plane) but what was lacking were drawings to reinforce or to make clear some of the principles Lang was trying to describe. The book read like a series of essays rather than a substantive, technical manual with supporting details.

The actual measured drawings are just that as they lack certain pertinent construction details. I am a fairly skilled woodworker, having started the craft at the age of fourteen and have continued until today, even after a successful career in architecture; and what I have concluded is that this book was hurriedly put together to meet some preset deadline. It is my opinion that if more time and thought was given by the author to the details it would have resulted in a much better book.

So I am sorely disappointed with the contents and the lack of detailing and would not recommend this book to anyone but very experienced woodworkers. Mr. Lang has missed the mark this time and what a pity.

I really like this book. We just bought a house and I am going to make or replace all the furniture with G&G inspired designs. This book is a great addition to my woodworking library for that purpose.
