Can be way better

It would be better if they provided online access like the Aspen books. The book in and of itself is thick and heavy. The font small which makes reading the dense material even more taxing. They don't even bother to speak in plain english with regards to explaining the topics. I found the book unbearable and utilized my explanations and examples book more to learn and study topics than this textbook. On the upside it's heavy enough to put on top of my cat carrier so that when she's in it she won't wiggle her way across the floor and down the stairs :)

As a science teacher I highly recommend this book for AP chemistry

I'm a high school science teacher for 16 years. Over the years, I have used and evaluated many different test prep products (including the big name companies). I am always looking for the best resources for my students. This book is the best that I have previewed because it has great questions that are challenging but easy to understand if you are familiar with the concepts. Good selections of wrong answers (reasonable but incorrect) which really requires an understanding of AP chemistry. All topics for AP chemistry are covered. The explanations are complete and detailed so much learning occurs from reading the explanations. Several students that I suggested this book to have used it and several that did great on the ap exam. If you are a parent or a student, this is the book I recommend to study from to ace the AP chem exam. I suggest that this book can be used during the school year to learn and review concepts covered in an AP course.

This book is different than an older version my friend used last year because now there are explanations for the questions. Great book to prepare for the AP chemistry exam. I learned alot from this book

I've been taking Piano lessons since the beginning of this year. This was the the book my Piano Teacher started me on. I'm an adult who knew nothing and I mean ABSOLUTELY nothing about the Piano.

I knew nothing about where the Middle C is on the Piano or how many notes there are on the Piano. This book taught me how to read the all the notes and how to play them and very quickly too!!!

Did I feel silly learning from this book??? No way... I wanted to learn how to play the Piano and this book got me started.

It's been 7 months and I'm playing pretty good.

Granted I'm no Liberace... but hey I don't mind. I'm having a BLAST!!! :[]

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to play the piano for the very first time.

Great for beginners of all ages

I'm a piano teacher, and I love this book! I find that students as young as 5 or 6 can understand it, and my 3 and 4 year olds are usually ready for this book after a few months of preparatory "games." I use this for all my beginners who are teenagers or younger (teenagers usually don't appreciate the "monster" characters, but they get over it). I'm also thinking about starting all new adult beginners with this book, since I haven't found an adult book I like as well. Many other books start with "pre-reading" songs, which use note symbols combined with finger numbers, then move to note symbols with letter names, then finally to notes on a staff. This book uses the "begin the way you intend to continue" theory, and starts students off reading notes on the staff right away instead of confusing them by making them learn 3 different systems of notation. Other books also teach "position playing," where students may learn to read notes in C position, then notes in G position, then F position, and so on. The danger of position playing is that students just learn to recognize patterns, and some of my transfer students who had used this method can't play anything unless they are first told where to put their hands. Part One of this John Thompson series stays in one position, but right away in Part Two they have to start learning new notes and moving their hands around, so if they can't read the notes they can't play the song. I love how Part One introduces one note at a time, and simplifies the first song that uses a new note or concept, so students truly learn all of the notes and concepts but aren't overwhelmed. There are a few things I don't like about this series. Part One is very good, and I can't complain too much about it--the first few songs are very boring without the CD, but I can't find any way to make them more interesting without also making it more difficult. Part Two introduces eighth notes too early for many students, and key signatures are introduced right after sharps and flats, which confuses most students. Part Three introduces new notes early in the book, but then doesn't use them in any of the songs that follow. Overall though, it's a great series and I intend to keep using if for all of my future beginners.

Great Beginner's Piano Book

This book is wonderful to begin teaching young children the rudiments of piano playing. The children are most excited when they have to play their parts while I play the accompaniment. These 'duet' sessions have generated much joy, laughter and fun, which is what music should be to children.

If your child requires more challenging work, I would suggest using this book in tandem with another book like from Michael Aaron's series or John Thompson's "Teaching Little Fingers to Play".

Great Reference and source book for music students

This book is very comprehensive, and contains most of the major works of classical music. Since it is a fake book, it does not contain the complete score, but only the melody line with chords marked above the notes. The words/lyrics are included for the vocals, and double-stops where it appears in the original. Also, unlike some other fake books, the compositions appear in their original key. It is both an excellent reference to music appreciation students, concert goers and instrumental students as well as a source of material for beginning music students. Many of the themes can be used in student recitals.
The book is plastic tabbed bound, but since it is over 600 pages long it is somewhat difficult to get the pages placed flatly. It also does not feel like it would be that durable because both the plastic tabs may break, or the slots on the pages would easily be torn. The size of the notes is also smaller than most music books. But for the price paid, this book gives good value as there are over 850 classical themes and melodies in one place.

FUN!

This book is a great pleasure. As a piano teacher, I've found that it provides fun for my young students. They can thumb through it and play page after page of marvelous classical melodies, incorporating their own chords. That's a great introduction to classical pieces which stimulates their interest in the original versions.
Some pianists may turn up their noses at the idea of a classsical fake book, but I'd point out that many of these pieces were originally written for orchestra, or--in the case of the older ones--for harpsichord, clavichord, organ, and so on. Some are taken from operas. Indeed, many of the classical works we use with our students are arrangements rather than ur-texts.
My students and I often laugh at the term "fake book"; especially for the keyboard players, these books would be more accurately named "creative books." The performer is called upon to provide his/her own harmony arrangements and rhythmic patterns. For talented musicians, "fake books" are a great opportunity for creative expression. That said, it must also be emphasized that students must have a strong foundation in piano basics, and that the teaching of ur-texts is vital for any student.
We love the "Classical Fake Book"---a hoot and a half! Highly recommended.

Everything you ever wanted to play

This is a fantastic book for people interested in playing themes from a wide range of classical music. Most of the selections are not very long but some, like my favorite Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, is long enough to play for a solo. I play harp at the bedside of the sick, so having these themes available in fake-book form allows me to easily create a scrapbook of selections. The chord format shortens the space that the music takes up. It also eliminates page turns. The music provided is advanced-beginner /intermediate: depending on your level of proficiency you can make the music as complex as you desire. Using the book, I can get to the heart of the themes of each piece without having to play lengthy movements.

Finally a photo book for actual Vietnam Veteran

Greetings, finally a photo book that actually shows operational practices of the M42A1 'Twin Forty' 40MM "Duster" in action, IN VIETNAM!
I purchased this book directly from Ampersand before it was commercially available.

If you served on this crew served weapon in Vietnam and do not have many surviving photos from Nam, this is the book you need to have. Each photo has been carefully researched and edited and annotated with specific names and locations. The first third is largely historical (Pre-Vietnam) and the last third is a detailed walk-around of the fully restored Dusters at the Tank Farm in Nokesville, VA. The middle third is chock full of actual photos shot by members of the three Duster Battalions that served in Vietnam from 1967 - 1971. You might even find a picture of your own 'track' (as we called them, it is not a tank!). Each photo was selected to show some pertinent aspect of how the weapon was used in Vietnam. Get this book! Take it to the VA and show them what you did and how it was used. There were only about 100 Dusters in Vietnam at the same time. People, historians, administrators do not know anything about these weapons or the hardship and sacrifices of the crews that served on them and the men that supported them in the field. These WERE COMBAT SOLDIERS!! Fighting alongside the Marines, the Infantry and the Artillery. They protected them on the road during the day and at the firebases at night. A truly unsung branch of the military service in Vietnam, overlooked and unheralded...UNTIL NOW!!!

Interesting book about the history of this unique machine. There are some great photos of the Duster in training and combat. For further reading, check out "Duster Duty, 1967"
